Writing Useful Photo Captions and Notes
Good captions turn a nice photo into a really useful record. This guide shows what to include (and what to skip) when describing buses on BusOva.
What makes a caption “useful”?
A useful caption tells someone something they cannot already see at a glance in the photo or basic data fields.
- When and roughly where the photo was taken (if not obvious).
- Anything unusual about the working - first day in service, rail replacement, diversion, last day of route, etc.
- Context about livery, branding, refurbishment or operator changes.
Simple caption patterns you can copy
Here are some easy templates you can adapt:
- “On route X to Destination, passing landmark, Month Year.”
- “In special branding for brand/route, seen at location.”
- “Working a rail replacement service between A and B.”
- “Fresh from repaint into new livery, seen at depot/terminus.”
Using the notes field alongside captions
Captions are for readers; notes can hold slightly more technical information for other contributors.
- Mention if the bus has recently transferred depots or operators.
- Record details such as “ex‑XYZ 1234” or “re‑registered from AB02 CDE” where known.
- If you are unsure about something in the caption, say so briefly (e.g. “believed to be first day in service”).
What to avoid
A few small things can make captions less helpful or even confusing.
- Overly personal comments (“my favourite bus ever”) - these are fine sometimes, but not as the only information.
- Speculation stated as fact - keep guesses clearly marked or leave them out.
- Repeating basic data (registration, fleet number) that the system already displays next to the photo.
