Bus Photo ID Checklist

A quick checklist you can run through each time you look at a photo before adding or updating a bus on BusOva.

A 10‑point checklist for any photo

You do not need to remember every chassis or body type. Start with these repeatable visual checks instead.

  • 1. Registration plate - is it clearly readable? If not, can another photo or angle help?
  • 2. Fleet number - check front, side and rear; some operators have very small numbers.
  • 3. Operator branding - logos, legal lettering and local branding panels.
  • 4. Number of decks - obvious, but check for open‑top conversions or partial decks.
  • 5. Doors - single vs dual door, and door position (front, centre, rear).
  • 6. Destination display - type (LED, flip‑dot, roller blind) and what route number/name is shown.
  • 7. Window layout - window spacing and shapes often distinguish bodywork types.
  • 8. Roofline and pods - any bump, pod or tank that might indicate hybrid/electric/hydrogen.
  • 9. Axles and length - two vs three axles, and rough length for identifying variants.
  • 10. Rear and engine area - vents, engine covers and lights can give away the chassis family.

What to do if something is missing

Not every photo will tick all ten boxes. The important thing is to be honest about what you cannot see.

  • If the registration is unclear, do not guess - add the photo under “unknown reg” if you are allowed, and mention it in the caption.
  • If you cannot be sure of the chassis, leave it blank and record the bodywork only if that is obvious.
  • Adding a note such as “fleet number only visible on offside” can help someone else cross‑check later.

Using multiple photos together

A single bus might have several photos in BusOva. Treat them as a set when you are trying to identify a tricky one.

  • Combine a clear rear shot (engine area) with a clear front three‑quarter view to narrow down chassis and body.
  • Interior photos can confirm number of doors, layout and accessibility features when exterior views are blocked.
  • If you upload several photos, try to cover different angles rather than near‑identical views.
