Common Mistakes When Identifying Buses

Nobody gets everything right first time. Here are some classic identification mistakes - and how to avoid them when adding buses to BusOva.

Mixing up chassis and bodywork

One of the most common issues is treating a body style name as if it were the whole model, or ignoring the chassis completely.

  • Remember that Gemini, Eclipse and similar names usually refer to bodywork, not the chassis underneath.
  • A Gemini body might sit on different chassis types (for example, Volvo or VDL) - you cannot assume from the body name alone.
  • Integral models (such as many ADL Enviros and Wright StreetDecks) are designed as one unit and often branded as such.

Relying only on the registration year

Registrations are handy, but they do not always match the build year or generation you might expect.

  • Some vehicles are re‑registered later in life, especially after being imported or rebuilt.
  • Demonstrators or show buses may have plates that do not match typical fleet patterns.
  • Re‑bodies and heavy refurbishments can make an older chassis look much newer than its registration.

Guessing from one angle or a distant shot

A blurry three‑quarter view can be misleading - different models can look very similar from one angle.

  • If you cannot clearly see key features (front, rear, window layout), leave the model blank rather than guessing.
  • Look for additional photos of the same bus - other contributors may have uploaded clearer views.
  • Use notes to say what you suspect and why, so others can help confirm or correct.

Forgetting that fleets change over time

It is easy to copy older information without noticing that a bus has since been transferred, repainted or withdrawn.

  • Check dates on sources - a fleetlist from several years ago may no longer be accurate.
  • If your photo shows a different operator or livery, treat that as the current state and mention the change in notes.
  • When in doubt, add a comment instead of overwriting everything - moderators can then reconcile the history.
