Spotting Electric, Hybrid and Hydrogen Buses
A practical spotting guide to modern low‑ and zero‑emission buses in the UK - focusing on visual clues you can see in photos when adding vehicles to BusOva.
Start with the exhaust (or lack of one)
The fastest way to narrow things down is to look for exhausts, roof pods and under‑floor equipment.
- Diesel - has a visible exhaust outlet, often at the rear or roofline, and usually a diesel particulate filter box.
- Hybrid - still has an exhaust, but you may also see extra roof pods or battery packs.
- Battery‑electric (BEV) - no exhaust; instead look for charging sockets and large battery pods.
- Hydrogen fuel cell (FCEV) - no exhaust in the traditional sense; roof‑mounted hydrogen tanks are the giveaway.
Roof pods, tanks and equipment
The roof is where many modern powertrain components live, especially on double decks.
- Battery pods - rectangular units along the roof, often above the front or rear section.
- Hydrogen tanks - cylindrical tanks in a row, usually on the roof towards the rear.
- Cooling packs - extra grilles or louvres on the roof, sometimes behind the top deck windows.
- Hybrid packs - smaller pods or extra boxes compared with full‑battery buses.
Charging and refuelling clues
Sometimes your photo will include infrastructure or clear views of the plug‑in point.
- Plug‑in socket doors - flaps on the nearside or front for depot charging.
- On‑street pantographs - overhead charging masts for opportunity‑charged buses.
- Hydrogen refuelling points - dedicated dispensers, sometimes shared with other fleets.
What to record on BusOva when you are not 100% sure
Powertrain can be one of the hardest things to confirm from a single photo. It is always better to leave it blank than to guess.
- If you cannot clearly see whether a bus is hybrid or pure diesel, leave the fuel type blank and mention what you suspect in the notes.
- If you do see clear battery pods or hydrogen tanks, mention their position and any visible branding in your caption.
- Linking to news releases or operator announcements in notes can help moderators and other users verify the information.
